Top 35 Marketing Words Defined







Marketing is no different than any other industry. We too have words that insiders know, but our customers don’t always. To help keep you in our circle of knowledge, here’s a list of 35 essential words that marketers often use. My hope is that this list assists you in your future conversations with your marketing team!

1. Algorithm

Algorithms are rules-based procedures to make calculations. They are commonly used on social media channels to display curated content to an audience.

2. Analytics

Analytics examine the information and report a pattern. In essence, they tell you what happened.

3. Blog

A blog is an online journal. They can be about anything. Many businesses use them as a marketing tool to draw readers to their website.

4. Brand Advocate

A brand advocate loves your product or service so much they go out and share it with the world, any chance they get.

5. Call to Action (CTA)

A call to action is important for every piece of marketing material produced. It tells the audience what you expect them to do next. An example of a CTA is “click here for more information”.

6. Campaign

A marketing campaign is the activities done to promote a product, service, or a business. A campaign starts with a goal and coordinates the marketing messages, marketing channels, and the intervals they will be sent at.

7. Chatbots

Chatbots use artificial intelligent to perform tasks. You often see them in messaging apps and are used to collect data and customer service.

8. CTR

Clickthrough Rate (CTR) is a metric used to record the number of people who viewed content and followed through on the call to action.

9. Community Management

Community management refers to the development of the relationships around a specific interest. This is done best by monitoring and engaging with those who share this common interest and then they become an advocate.

10. Content Curation

Content curation is a process that sorts through the internet for relevant and shareable content and presents it to the audience.

11. Content Marketing

Content marketing is a strategy that creates new and valuable content aimed at engaging an audience in commenting, liking, and sharing.

12. Conversions

A conversion occurs when a visitor from a social site takes an action on a website converting them into a customer.

13. Creative Commons

Creative commons is a public copyright license allowing the user to use and share copyrighted content. Some of the content allows the user to freely use it while others are limited. It is important to know what type of creative commons the material used falls under prior to use.

14. Direct Message (DM)

A direct message is a message on a social site that comes in the form of an email. Only the person sending and receiving can see the message.

15. Display Ad

A display ad is an ad you see on websites in a small banner format.

16. Employee Advocate

An employee advocate is an employee who is willing to defend a business both on and offline. They are people of high influence of their peers, family, and friends and help influence purchases.

17. Engagement

Engagement refers to the act of interacting with people on social media networks.

18. Facebook Group

A facebook group is a space on Facebook where people can share content with select people. Groups can be public, closed, and secret. A public group anyone can see and be a part of. Closed groups are only for select people but can be found through a search. Secret groups are known only to members.

19. Handle

A handle is a person’s social media profile name.

20. Hashtag

A hashtag is the symbol # and is used to tag words or phrases. These are used on social sites to make them discoverable.

21. Impressions

Impressions are the number of times an ad, sponsored update, or promoted post is displayed.

22. Influencer

We use the word influencer to refer to people who have a vast reach and can drive awareness about a topic, product, or service. An ideal influencer is already on board with a brand and is an active brand advocate.

23. Marketing Automation

Marketing automation allows businesses to automatically deliver content to customers and prospects through numerous channels like websites and social media channels.

24. Microblogging

Microblogs are short and frequent diaries found on sites like Twitter and Tumblr.

25. Organic Reach

Organic reach refers to the unique people who view content without paid promotion. These are the posts the user posted for free and did not boost or pay for any advertisement.

26. Paid Reach

Just as in the name, paid reach refers to the number of views of content boosted or paid for as an advertisement. Sponsored content is an example of paid advertisements that are commonly seen in a social media news feed.

27. Reach

Reach is the potential audience size a piece of content could reach. Unlike impressions, this does not mean that all those who the post can reach are actually reached.

28. Retargeting

Whenever you see an ad that seems to follow you, this is an example of retargeting. Once a viewer goes to a website and clicks around, that site can then use things they were interested in, in an ad to stay top of mind until a sale is made.This type of advertising is targeted at those who express an interest in a website and more likely to turn into a buyer.

29. Scheduling

Scheduling content to be posted at optimal times in the future are very helpful to any marketer. They not only free up time to work on other projects, they share content at specific intervals based on the audiences schedule.

30. Search Engine Marketing (SEM)

Search engine marketing (SEM) is made up of pay-per-click ads and paid inclusion that attracts customers and builds brand awareness and trust.

31. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Search engine optimization is the process of organically increasing a website’s visibility. This includes adding high-traffic keywords, optimizing website layout, design, and content.

32. Social Media Listening

Social media listening is finding and watching what is said about a business, topic, brand, or a person on social media.

33. Social Media Optimization (SMO)

Social media optimization is the process of generating publicity on social media channels. Many businesses use social media to drive traffic to their business and websites from social channels rather than a search engine.

34. User Generated Content (UGC)

Whenever a user of social media shares a post about a brand this is user generated content. Many businesses embrace and encourage this type of content because it leads to brand awareness and customer loyalty.

35. Vlog

A vlog is a video blog. Just as a blog, it is a diary, only in the form of a video. Sometimes a transcription follows.
